This is a follow up video concerning the communique published by the greek coast guard in relation to the video titled “Greek Coast Guard caught on video pushing a boat full of refugees back to Turkey” (watch the video athttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1k2THtF9h6M).
Following the video and the publicity it gained, the greek coast guard, as well as the Greek alternate minister for Immigration George Koumoutsakos stated, that “from the video one cannot conclude that it’s a push back, and that its unclear if this happened in Greek waters”.
So, here is a second video by the Aegean Boat Report, showing more details on this illegal pushback, verifying what was initially claimed. Indeed, as it can be seen, the greek coast guard prevents the course of the plastic boat carrying 34 refugees (of which 14 were children), southeast of Agathonisi, changes the course of the dinghy creating waves with its engine and clearly hands the refugees over to the turkish coast guard (boat Sahik Guvelnik 21) waiting few dozen meters away, illegaly, contrary to the international law.
It has to be noted that initially the refugees think that the greek coast guard, although it does not help them in any way, at least it moves away from their boat, thus letting them to continue their journey and they begun cheering and clapping, only to realize as the turkish coast guard quickly moves in, that the greek coast guard just handed them over to get arrested.
Indeed, the incident happened a few minutes after 4:30 on the morning of Wednesday 17 July 2019 and on the same day the turkish authorities announced of the arrest of “34 illegal immigrants (14 men, 6 women, 14 children), 27 from Syria, 6 from Iraq and a Palestinian, off the coast of Mederez on a rubber boat”.
